Vans started in 1966 in Anaheim with a deck-shoe sole and a canvas upper — and the canvas is what makes it our most expressive base. Where leather wants composition and restraint, Vans canvas takes line work, type, tattoo flash and dense pattern beautifully. Angelus paint sinks into the weave, locks down with a heat-set, and stays put. If the brief is fine line, lyric panels, all-over print or anything that looks hand-drawn, Vans is the silhouette we reach for first.
